Apple has seeded Beta 1 of build 2.2 of the iPhone firmware to developers. There are no documented differences from 2.1 other than "compatibility testing". However, we expect to see push notification popping up sooner or later.
Push notification is Apple's way of virtually running applications in the background. Such a feature will greatly extend the capabilities of apps such as AIM which currently cease running once the app is closed.
At this year's WWDC 2008, Apple announced that push notification would be available for the iPhone this September. However, it seems unlikely that Apple will make this deadline as they have already released firmware update 2.1 earlier this month. Interestingly, push notification was introduced in a beta build of the iPhone 2.1 firmware but was removed from the goldmaster release.
Here's looking forward to another solid firmware update from Apple.
