Downloading video content into iDVD or iMovie

A novice question:

We were given a DVD of a school event which I'd like to upload into either iDVD or iMovie.

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

What exactly are you trying to do? iDVD and iMovie have two different functions. Are you trying to make a copy of the DVD or do you want to rip the content to your Mac?

 - iMovie is used for video editing. Lets say you recorded a movie of a trip to Australia, you can import it into iMovie and snip here and snip there etc etc...

 - With iDVD you can make a DVD from QuickTime Movies (like one that you exportedin iMovie), mp3 files and photos that can be played in a commercial DVD player. For example if you recorded a movie on your camcorder and want to create a DVD.

If you want to upload it into iMovie or iDVD, you will first have to rip the DVD with a program like handbrake. Its pretty easy to use, pop in the DVD, (quit the DVD player when it launches) and open handbrake. You can choose quicktime movie from the preset and then rip it. Depending on the size of the DVD and the Mac you are using, this can take a long time.

After ripping is complete, you can import the file into iMovie or iDVD. Hope this helps.
