The Safari 4 Installer also comes with an uninstaller. Just open the .dmg and you will find it.

Hello there,

A .dmg is a type of disk image that can be mounted on your computer. Think of it as a virtual cd/dvd. On the mac, when you download applications off the internet (in this case Safari 4 Beta), they are packaged as a .dmg. You can mount or unmount a .dmg file to access its contents. This is equivalent to you putting in the cd/dvd and taking it out of a computer - I hope you get the parallel.

For the situation above, simply download Safari Beta 4 again to get the .dmg file. (PS. .dmg files are automatically mounted when downloaded from using Safari. If it doesn't mount automatically, just double click the downloaded file) Inside this .dmg, you will find a Safari Beta 4 Unistaller.

Unfortunately, now that Safari 4 is out of Beta, Apple no longer provides an uninstaller with the dmg. Currently, there is no way of uninstalling Safari 4.0 without reinstalling the OS and choosing never to upgrade it. Best bet is to try another browser like Firefox, Opera or Chrome.

This is the fix !!! I have working on this for weeks !!! go to this link or copy it to a browser!!!
Worked for Tiger, I was blown away! Got my bookmarks back too !!!
You cant uninstall Safari 4, unless you go to your Mac OS discs and Archive and install.
Then you have to get the updates to get back where you were, (for me 10.4.7/ then updates to 10.4.11)
That takes about 3 hours to do and is "risky" if you dont know what you are doing !(you can delete your whole hard drive !)

Thanks for posting the link to your Safari builds Michel. What is the difference with downloading your build, or just using the default one after a reinstall and just choosing never to update it?

Yes you are correct, typically Safari doesn't include an uninstaller, however Yohanparkphoto was asking about Safari 4 Beta (all the way back in March). At that time, Apple included an uninstaller in the package (since Safari 3 was still the 'official' web browser) and gave you the option of choosing either one.

Everyone is making such a big deal about deleting Safari 4.... Discussions of it taking 3 hours etc could not be further from the truth.

It takes less than a minute & could not be more simple as long as you have a copy of Safari 3.2.1 To remove Safari 4, click on Safari in Applications folder, holding down the control button & select 'show package contents', then delete 'contents.'

Drag Safari 3 (from wherever you have it stored) into Applications and you are up and running having got rid of terrible Safari 4!!

Hope this helps

Mishoo13,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've been all over the web looking for a way to do this and even the so called "experts" are saying it's impossible and griping that Apple is becoming fascistic because of the lack of an uninstaller on this version of Safari.

I started out using Macs running System 7, but went to PCs because of the companies I worked for. I just recently purchased a Mac to run ProTools and found quite a few changes, but this fix reminds me of the virtual simplicity that made me fall in love with Macs in the first place!

thanx again,
swafo

YOUR ADVICE IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT!!!

You will only remove the Safari Application, but not the WebKit Engine which runs in the background.

What you say may be true, but since I followed this fix all of the problems I'd been having are now fixed. So perhaps it's just the Safari app that sucks and the WebKit engine is OK. Whatever, it works for me. I'm running 10.4.11 on "the last true Mac", a dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4.

Your "fix" for uninstalling Safari 4 is complete nonsense, since it doesn't do anything of the sort. You have no idea what you're talking about, and it shows. The only way to remove Safari 4 from a 10.5 installation and revert to a previous build of Safari is to do an Archive & Install, which can take up to 3 hours, but that all depends on how large the hard disk is and what you've got on it.

Anyone who follows your nonsensical advice will encounter serious problems.

I downloaded a trial version of Amnesia from Apples site. Uninstalled Safari 4 and copied 3.2.1 back over from a backup disk. So far so good! No lag, fast loading. I’m so happy!

Not sure if the “webkit” is in use but I’m back to fast performance.

I hope this helps.

I also experienced many problems running Safari 4 on my G4, which is running OS 10.4.11.

I found that it was very easy to uninstall and reinstall Safari 3, following these steps:

1. Download the desired version of Safari from this site: http://michelf.com/projects/multi-safari/

(I installed Safari 3.0.4. The program downloaded to my desktop, where it was labeled "3.0.4")

2. Locate Safari 4 in your Applications folder (or wherever you stored it) and drag it to the trash.

3. Empty the trash.

4. Drag the downloaded version of Safari from your desktop into your Applications folder.

It was that easy, and my Safari 3.0.4 is now running like a dream. The Safari 4 nightmare is over!

I had inadvertently installed Safari 4 while remaining with Tiger. I went round and round trying to uninstall it and reinstall Safari 3. Anonymous' method worked for me. I sent Safari4 to the trash bin, emptied the trash, and used the link he/she provided, downloaded and installed Safari 3.0.4(Tiger Version) and voila! my problems were solved! Way to go anonymous! Kudos and thanks to Michel Fortin for this excellent solution!

wow there is so much conflicting on this. Has anyone figured out the fix yet? I'm running 10.4.11 and since downloading the safari 4 update my machine is running slow as anything. I certainly am no expert and worry about screwing something else up if I do this wrong, but I would really like my old safari back and this one gone! any sound advice out there. thanks in advance.

Despite what others have suggested, the only way to downgrade Safari 4 is to reinstall your OS.

Just wanted to say that anonymous' post link http://michelf.com/projects/multi-safari/ was extremely helpful and easy. It works without having to uninstall your operating system (which is really scary). So thanks for the fix.
