Beejive IM provides a comprehensive solution for instant messaging on your iPhone. You will never have a problem keeping in touch with all your friends on the go with this feature laden app! The $15.00 that you will pay for Beejive is well worth the convenience and features that come with it.
Beejive is a very stable app and has not crashed on me since I downloaded it. Set-up is extremely easy. Simply launch the app and select accounts and hit the plus sign to choose an account type. Beejive currently supports Aim/Mobile Me, Windows Live/MSN, Yahoo, Myspace, Jabber, GoogleTalk and ICQ. You will absolutely enjoy the amount of customization you can apply to your Beejive app. So many options give it a very personalized feel and you are able to navigate the interface very comfortably.
Now Beejive Inc. are seasoned developers of IM clients as they offer Beejive IM for multiple devices. Once you try the app, you will agree that they know what people want: options! Trust me, Beejive does not disappoint; they offer tons of them. I believe the iPhone version must be their best release to date as they make optimal use of all the unique capabilities built in the iPhone! You will enjoy chatting with your friends using this app! Firstly, the app retains the colored bubble chatting interface that you may be familiar with from iChat, which makes it feel kinda like the official IMing client for the iPhone. What I love most about the app is that they take no preference setting for granted, but they give you the option to choose!
Choices!
You can customize the outgoing and incoming chat bubble colors and background color also. Don't like Apple's built in auto-correct? Then toggle it off in preferences. What about typing in landscape mode, the table divider, your buddy list layout, vibration, sent and received IM sounds, emoticons, auto-away... and the list goes on. Beejive allows you to customize all these and many more in your app's settings.
Beejive also offers options for organizing your contacts. You can sort them by online status, by group and arrange you buddy lists by status or their display name. You also have a Favorites pane to put your preffered contacts for quick access.
Features!
You have all the features you would expect in an IM client - the ability to add, block, delete and group your buddies. You can also edit your profile info and change your profile pic on the spot. These are all implemented rather efficiently. However, let's look at a few of the features you will absolutely love about Beejive! You can engage in multiple chats simultaneously and can switch between them with ease. For example, you can set the the client to switch between your active chats when you shake your iPhone. Since I mostly use my iPhone with one hand, a simple jerk to the right does the trick. Most of the time I'm on the move so I keep my chat sensitivity on medium to prevent accidental switching. You can even set the chat transition to flip or slide in your preferences.
You can search your contacts. Now if like me, you have many people in your contacts list, this feature come in extremely handy. And even though I choose to hide my offline buddies in my settings, I can still get their info by doing a quick search.
Now every great app must have a coup de grace, you know that one feature that makes it irresistible, and Beejive is no exception. Many people have been been bummed out that Apple currently does not allow background processes to run on the iPhone. Beejive has circumvented that however, by providing what they call "push email". Basically this allows you to close Beejive and use other apps and be notified via email if anyone sends you an IM. This is your best option until Apple releases their long overdue "push notification". This feature was supposed to have landed 2 months ago, but like GreenDay, "Wake Me Up When September Ends"!
Beejive offers so many more features that I could not cover it all in this review and probably has many features that I am yet to discover. But hey, go grab your copy from the App Store and share your experience with me! Feel free to IM me on AIM: mikeischris!
What we'd love to see:
- Facebook Chat (Don't know if it's possible, but it would be cool)
- The ability to conference with three or more people
- Location Awareness in settings
- VoIP calling
