App Review: AirMote
AirMote by Leptonics Systems is undoubtedly one of the most potent remote apps you will find for the iPhone. The app requires no additional application to be installed on the Mac and set-up over wi-fi is basically automatic.
Media Master
Apple's Remote app is fantastic, but limited to only iTunes. With AirMote, you can control all the popular media players for the Mac - Front Row, DVD Player, Quicktime, VLC, iTunes and Plex. The biggest drawback with AirMote's control for Media players is that it lacks control buttons like rewind or fast forward. Though these commands can be accomplished, it can be very difficult to control.
Keynote and Powerpoint
This app does a fantastic job as a Keynote controller. You can switch between slides with easy and provides full control over your presentation. This is a convenient and inexpensive solution for anyone looking for increased mobility in their presentations.
Make Your Own Remote
Yup! You read correctly. If a software or device can be controlled by your computer using simple keyboard strokes, there is a good chance that you can create a custom remote for it using Airmote. I use it to quickly browseand quick-look documents in coverflow, read Mail, launch items from the dock and much more!
The app is in need of better documentation and instructions. While AirMote is potent, it is very complicated and figuring out all the controls might be intimidating and frustrating for many. A couple video tutorials from the developer would do this app wonders! AirMote is still a bit buggy and while it did not crash my iPhone like many other apps, the computer stopped responding to it after a while. A simple relaunch of the app fix this problem.
If you are looking for a convenient way to control your mac via remote from your iPhone, grab your copy of AirMote from the app store for $2.99.
