App Review: Noter2

Submitted by Chris on December 9, 2008 - 5:51pm
Rating:
1.7

dBelement currently offers a handful of apps for the iPhone - Noter2, Reader, Stripr, Financer Lite, MindDojo and CityRunnr. Today we take at Noter2, a unique list manager that brings a breath of original design to the monotonous design that plagues most of the others. This is an app that we believe has a lot of potential, but which needs to be brought back to the drawing board.

First let me say that the app is very colorful and syncs well with your dBelement account. Editing and managing your notes is fairly simple and you also have the option to color code them. We weren't particularly impressed with the functionality of Noter2 but more by its attempt at a unique design. With a few updates, this app could be really great! The current design however is counterproductive. For example, the move function is not as easy as the 'edit and drag' that most other apps employ. Also the space for text input for notes is way too small. Consequently, the app is more efficient as a simple To-Do list rather than a full blown notes application.

If you are looking to provide optimal protection for your iPhone, cases from Vaja should definitely be on your list to consider. They offer high quality cases for the iPhone with tons of customization options available! They also have a great website where you can check out all their products and make customizations.

Today we'll take a look at their iVolution SP case for the iPhone 3G which is available for $95.00. If you are in an environment where your iPhone may be exposed to a little banging around here and there (kids anyone?), the SP may be a great fit for you. It has a slightly retro look to it and is blue with a white stripe down the middle. You can immediately tell when you touch the SP that it is made of really strong and high quality leather. (Don't you just love the smell of good leather?!) You can trust this case to provide some serious protection for your iPhone.

Hands On With The Rivet Boneless Silicone Case

Submitted by Chris on December 2, 2008 - 2:24pm

Last week, we had a chance to check out Rivet's Boneless Silicone Case for the iPhone 3G and today I'll tell you all you need to know. First let me say, the color combination of black, red and white is simply irresistible! The case adds a certain vibe to the iPhone that just cannot go unnoticed! It has a very sporty yet classical feel to it and a great grip. Your iPhone feels very comfy in your hand and not as fragile as it does without a case.

Dictionaries by Paragon Technologie

Submitted by Chris on December 2, 2008 - 9:26am
Rating:
2.5

The iPhone is the perfect device for carrying around a handy dictionary in your pocket. While it would have been great to see Apple's default Dictionary on OS X available for the iPhone, third party developers are creating alternatives. Today, we look at 2 of the more than 75 dictionaries offered by Paragon Technologie.

Concise Oxford English Dictionary

This is an excellent dictionary for both non-native and native speakers of the english language. The first big feature is that you can listen to the pronunciation of many of the words being spoken by a native speaker. Another advantage of Paragon's dictionaries is the ability to not only search but to also browse the dictionary. This is extremely useful for building vocabulary or for searching for words you can't quite put a finger on. The dictionary features foreign terms and colloquial expressions that many other dictionaries omit. I was pleasantly surprised to find whisht - "chiefly Scottish & Irish hush". The Consise Oxford Dictionary has 64,154 entries and is available from the App Store for $24.99.

If you're a big fan of the popular TV series, you should definitely take a look at Gameloft's CSI: Miami. The game is also great for anyone who just loves to piece together a good mystery! In the game, you play the lead role of Lieutenant Horatio Caine and the objective is to solve a murder from start to finish. You must collect and analyze evidence, perform autopsies, interrogate suspects, make observations and piece it all together just like in the real show. Of course, you have your hard-working team to help you and to give you hints when you're messing up :)

App Review: inForm

Submitted by Chris on December 1, 2008 - 11:45am
Rating:
2.5

inForm is an amazing and well needed addition to the productivity suite of apps available for the iPhone. With inForm, you can create forms right from your iPhone. The interface is simple and elegant and the forms created are really gorgeous. For researchers on the go, this is the great app for collecting data!

First, I must commend artscii for the great video tutorials. The video tutorials are a nice touch- more developers should really follow this example. This made learning to use the app so much easier. You can access the tutorials directly from the app or on their support website. The app includes 7 templates that really come in handy when you want to create forms on the fly. You will love the eye candy in inForm. Some fields have really nice icons beside them like email and location. The location field uses the built in GPS to locate you and inputs your coordinates in the field! Nifty!

App Review: AirMote

Submitted by Chris on December 1, 2008 - 9:24am
Rating:
2.5

AirMote by Leptonics Systems is undoubtedly one of the most potent remote apps you will find for the iPhone. The app requires no additional application to be installed on the Mac and set-up over wi-fi is basically automatic.

Media Master

Apple's Remote app is fantastic, but limited to only iTunes. With AirMote, you can control all the popular media players for the Mac - Front Row, DVD Player, Quicktime, VLC, iTunes and Plex. The biggest drawback with AirMote's control for Media players is that it lacks control buttons like rewind or fast forward. Though these commands can be accomplished, it can be very difficult to control.
