Turn-By-Turn Voice Navigation Available for Jailbroken iPhones

Submitted by Chris on February 11, 2009 - 7:48am

xGPS has released a turn-by-turn voice navigation app for the iPhone that seems very desirable! The only catch is that it is only available on Jailbroken iPhones. The app uses Google maps data to provide the turn by turn directions that are simply read out in real time by a voice engine. You can use the maps manager to download a section of the map before your journey if you want to ensure you don't run into any connection problems. Check out ModMyi's hand's on video and read their impressions on their website:

North American Oxford Dictionary

The New Oxford American Dictionary from Handmark is a well designed and powerful dictionary application for the iPhone. For $29.99 you receive a digital version of the New Oxford American Dictionary (Second Edition) complete with 250,000 entries, 60,000 audio pronunciations, along with some great extra features. Considering that the manufacturer suggested retail price for the actual hardcopy is $60.00, this is runaway deal.

During the past month, I had the opportunity to spend some quality time reviewing Wallet from Acrylic Software. It has certainly lived up to my expectations in being a streamlined, high caliber solution for password management on both my Mac and my iPhone. Looking back, 3 words come to mind - simple, sleek and secure.

App Store Plus: Premium Apps For Your iPhone

Submitted by Chris on January 30, 2009 - 3:48pm
App Store Plus

Citing anonymous sources, PocketGamer.biz posted an article claiming that Apple is planning on introducing a "Premium Games" section of the App Store. While no details about the launch date have been provided, the company identifies WWDC '09 as a likely possibility. PocketGamer specifies however that "the initiative will only be open to a restricted number of large publishers, rather than the thousands of smaller developers currently selling their titles on the main App Store."

In my opinion, Apple supporting such a restricted elite within the already highly regulated App Store market doesn't make any sense and would be just plain worrying. Make no mistake about it, the idea of a "Premium Games" section in itself is not a bad idea. This concept can be a good move by Apple IF it is done correctly. It simply cannot be restricted to large companies. Here are my thoughts and questions on the matter:

Apples2Oranges

Illium Software has released a handy new app called Apples2Oranges for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Simply put, the app allows you to compare the price and nutritional info of 2 different things in either the same units or different ones. It helps users save money, and watch more carefully what they're eating.
