How to Jailbreak & Unlock Your iPhone running OS 3.1.2
If like me, you have finally decided to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone, here is a quick guide that will show you how to do it in less than 4 minutes. I'll also include how to enable tethering once your iPhone has been jailbroken. Thanks to Geohot and his Blackra1n app, jailbreaking is superfast and easy.
This guide is for an iPhone 3G/3GS running OS 3.1.2. Before you begin, ensure you're iPhone is plugged in, synced and backed up. You know the drill, MAG will not be held responsible for anything that happens to your device.(If you follow the steps as specified, you should not run into any problems).
Step 1 - Jailbreaking
- On your Mac, go to http://blackra1n.com and click the Apple logo to download the blackra1n application
- (Your iPhone should already be connected) Launch the application and select "Make It Rain". You're done.
You will see Geohot's picture on your iPhone's screen. Wait for your iPhone to restart (If the iTunes Alert Window pops up when restarting informing that it has detected an iPhone in Recovery mode, just ignore it).
Step 2 - Get an Installer
Your iPhone will look the same except you will now see the blackra1n app.
- Click the Blackra1n app.
- You will see 3 packages to choose from along with their description. Think of Cydia and Rock as Rogue App Stores, you can install either one or both.
Step 3 - Unlock (Optional)
- In the blackra1n app, select sn0w if you want to unlock your iPhone and then tap "Install".
Tethering (Requires Unlock)
With this method, both Visual Voicemail and Tethering will still work
- On your iPhone, launch Safari and go to http://www.myappleguide.com/Tether.mobileconfig. If you are not on AT&T, use this instead http://www.benm.at/help - scroll to the Tethering and Internet Settings>Choose your country>Choose your carrier
- Install the the Profile
- Navigate to Settings>General>Network. You should now see an option for Internet Tethering. Turn it on.
- You can tether via Bluetooth or via USB. Let me know in the comments if you need additional help with this.
Congratulations on your jailbreak! Now we can share cool themes and ideas for mods :) Also, if you can, hop back over to Geohot and drop him a donation for his hard work!

Unfortunately no - not as far as I know.
my iphone 3g has been jailbroken for quike some time noe i want to tether but when i take all these steps and go into my setting theres nothing there what am i doing wrong?
What method did you use to jailbreak? I would suggest that you re-jailbreak with blackra1n.
I jailbroke with blackra1n and it didnt show tethering either.. help?
I have a couple questions:
1 - Do you have to both jailbreak and unlock to tether? Because I would love to tether, but I don't want to risk getting my phone turned into a brick.
2 - Is there a safe reliable way to get my iPhone back to the way it was if I decide I don't like the jailbroken version?

No you don't. Once you jailbreak, unlocking is optional. Yes you must unlock to tether.
2 - Is there a safe reliable way to get my iPhone back to the way it was if I decide I don't like the jailbroken version?
Yes, just simply do a restore in iTunes and your iPhone will be back to normal.
Did you install the profile from the link provided? Try resetting your network preferences.
Oh ok, thanks!
I tried tethering too, but it didn't show up in the network section. I do see at the bottom of General it says profile US AT&T Tethering. I tried reseting my network preferences, but it didn't help.
I just realized that I only included an AT&T-only tethering file. If you are on AT&T, it should have worked. If not, delete the profile you installed and try installing from here (go there on your iPhone): http://www.benm.at/HELP - scroll down to Tethering and Internet Settings, Choose your country and your carrier and install. This one breaks Visual Voicemail on AT&T however.
okay, i got the tethering to show up, and turn on
asks me if i want to use usb or bluetooth, i said usb. then nada
before the 3.1 update i had tethering, and it prompted my computer once i turned it on. now it just says on and does nothing except kick up my itunes and sync my phone. i unlocked. didnt knwo if i had to so i did anyways. any think you can think of?
I do have AT&T. Are there any other setting that have to be in place or any other programs that have to be installed?
Hmm not sure why it's not working for you Billy…and are you sure you are jailbroken? Do you have the Blackra1n icon on your phone?
disregard my message, somehow it just kicked on randomly haha
cheers
didnt work for me. iphone stalled out after the geohot image on the screen. stuck in the "usb plug into iTunes" screen. anyone idea whats up?
I am jailbroken, I have blackra1n and all that. =(
The tethering profile says that it's "unsigned," could that have any effect?
Hey I installed the blackrain app, went through the jailbrake process, installed rock, but did not install sn0w
then I went to the http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig link using Safari on the iPhone and installed the profile
but I don't see a tethering option in the network settings. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for any help you can provide
Ok…I'm going to restore my iPhone and re-jailbreak to see if I can reproduce the problem.
Billy, It seems tethering can only be enable on AT&T only if you unlock your phone. Therefore you must install blacksn0w.
Oh ok. So, I can just install blacksn0w now and it'll work? Cool. Thank You!
if i jail break will i loose my data????????
whats the difference between usb and via bluetooth
No, jailbreaking with this method keeps your phone just the way it is. Your phone will simply restart and the only difference you will notice is that you will have the blackra1n app installed.
(As a precaution, you should always backup your iPhone in any case. You may need to restore it)
Tethering via usb requires you to have your iPhone connected to your notebook via the usb cable. Advantage: Connection not disrupted unless cable is removed, charges while you are tethering. Disadvantage: Must keep iPhone plugged into laptop.
Tethering via bluetooth is done wirelessly using a bluetooth connection between both devices. Advantages: no cables, more flexibility in movement (both devices must stay in range however). Disadvantage: battery life will drain faster (unless you have your iPhone on a charging dock).
Restore it in iTunes and try again. Just out of curiosity, what happens when you connect it to iTunes? If you have a problem, do this:
With your Phone plugged in, hold down the power and home buttons. When your Phone restarts and you see the Apple logo, keep holding the home button and release the power button. iTunes will say it has detected an iPhone in DFU mode and will restore it.
Man, this is great!! No probs at all!!
Thanks a bunch, donation on the way!!
Ookay, cannot believe how simple and straight forward that is!
that being said i have one issue which is kinda big!
every once and a while i will completely loss service! i have unlocked and jailbroken my phone, and i will got ot download somethigna nd all bars just disappear and says no service!
anyone else with this issue?
thank a lot
and thanks for the super easy directions!
Joel
This is what I would suggest to troubleshoot Joel:
Reset your Network Settings - if you are still having issues, then you may have to take more drastic measures.
I had a similar issue and had to end up restoring my iPhone and setting it up as a new device. You WILL lose all your previous information including notes, MMS messages and any info you had stored in your apps. However, this is the only way to ensure you have a clean slate.
Then go ahead and jailbreak and unlock. This fixed it for me, hopefully it helps.
how do i reset my network setting i don see that option!
thanks again

Is it possible to tethering only without jailbreak the 3G?
I am still on 3.0.1 (with tethering but not jailbreak) but afraid to upgrade and losing tethering.
